Golf in Spain

It is becoming increasingly common for North Europeans to move to Spain when they retire from their jobs, or to buy a holiday home to fly off to in the winter. For many of them, golf is one of the main attractions.

This is because Spain has everything golf enthusiasts – novices and seasoned veterans alike – could wish for. Over and above entertaining and challenging courses to suit all skill levels, there are all kinds of attractions and amusements to fill the hours between the rounds: swimming, fine dining and trendy shopping to name but a few.

Valderrama is one of the most classic golf courses in Europe, and probably the Spanish course that most Europeans will have heard of. It is located in Sotogrande, Cádiz on the Costa del Sol and has hosted numerous championships, including the Ryder Cup 1997 – the first time that the competition was held outside the United States or Great Britain. However, there are great many other courses in the area to suit both amateurs and professionals.

There are many reasons why golf in Spain is so exciting; for example, there are all kinds of new courses to discover and explore, and the golf course is a great place to make new friends ... Of course, if you would like to take a break from the greens to work on your technique, there are numerous training courses and English-speaking pros to help you.

Guidance for golf players in Spain

• Book in advance. Many of the courses regularly host competitions, so it can be difficult to book tee times at short notice. Book well in advance and take your booking confirmation with you.

• If possible, avoid playing during the middle of the day in summer, as it can be very hot.

• Always make sure to take plenty of water with you on the course. It is also a good idea to put an ice pack in with the water bottles in your bag.

• Use sunscreen!

• Many of the courses are quite hilly, so it may be a good idea to hire a golf buggy.

• Don't be afraid to ask for hints and advice from the locals, or your new golfing friends. Many of them can direct you to little golfing gems that most tourists are unaware of.
